Nigeria at 24th congress of Universal Postal Union

By Adaobi Nwangwu

At the on-going 24th Congress of the Universal Postal Union, UPU, holding in Geneva, Switzerland, Nigeria is seeking re-election of the International organization’s Chairmanship of Finance Committee.
Nigeria is also using the opportunity to seek membership of the Postal Operations Council, Council of Administration, Quality of Service Board, Universal Service Obligation Group, Telematic Operations Committee and Publishing Sector Group.
Public Relations Manager and Chairperson of the Service Improvement Task Force of the Nigeria Postal Service, Ms. Hussaina Charity Ato, disclosed this in Abuja.
According to the P.R.O, the conference will carry out among other things the review of the strategies adopted four years ago at the 2004 Bucharest Congress also known as the Bucharest World Postal Strategy; review of the rules and regulations on operations, review of payment of tariff between member administrations and analyze the main results achieved within the framework of the recommendations of the Bucharest World Postal Strategy.
Emphasizing on Nigeria’s re-election as Chairmanship of the Finance Committee and other positions at the conference, she said that the election into the various committees being eyed by Nigeria comes with a lot of benefits in terms of technical and financial support, which will no doubt impact positively on the on-going reform and restructuring of the postal sector in the country.
Mr. Kola Adeloju, the senior post master in charge of International Operations, said that it was on record that Nigeria has occupied many important positions in the Union, notably her election into the Postal Operations Council at the Seoul Congress in 1994 and her election at the Bucharest Congress in 2004 as the Chairman of the Finance Committee, making her the first African country to occupy such coveted position in the Union.
Again, he disclosed that as part of efforts to reposition NIPOST and modernize its operations, NIPOST was collaborating with other service providers, namely NIGCOMSAT, for the provision of about 1500 V-Sat Centers across the various postal locations in the country, a development that would witness customers transferring funds faster across the country to any bank of your choice.
