Odey tasks editorial board on professionalism

By Adaobi Nwangwu

The Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. John Odey, has charged members of the editorial board of the Nigeria Monthly magazine to maintain high professionalism and standards in every edition to reflect their credible diverse backgrounds and experiences, as well as compete favourably with other local and international magazines.
The minister gave this advice on Tuesday in his office in Abuja, when he inaugurated the newly constituted board of the Nigeria Monthly, a magazine published by his ministry.
According to the Odeh, "in carrying out the objectives of disseminating information on the government and people of Nigeria, the magazine must ensure that professional standards are never compromised; objectivity, balance truth and fairness should be the hallmark of the monthly.''
Mr. Odey further stated that with the inauguration of the board, the editorial policy of each edition of the magazine has been fully invested in them.
The minister enjoined the editorial board members to emphasize the premium placed on transparency and accountability by the present administration. The magazine should endeavour to highlight the strides made in this regard, while in the same vein serve as a platform to disseminate information on federal government's 7-point agenda and Vision 2020. The magazine should not be seen or regarded as another tool for government propaganda by Nigerians.
Responding on behalf of the members, Malam Kabiru Dangogo pledged the willingness of the editorial board to bring their wealth of experience to bear on the magazine.
In another development, Mr. John Odey has expressed the readiness of the Yar'Adua administration to provide the platform for Nigerian youths to fully express themselves and excel in their chosen professions.
Mr. Odey stated this in his office last week when he received a portrait of himself, the Minister of State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Nakande, and the Permanent Secretary, Dr. (Mrs) Timiebi Koripamo Agary, produced by a young artiste, Mr. Azubuike Chiekezie, and a Radio House Directional Chart presented by a youth corps member, Mr. Femi Irefin.
