Directors of sports pick holes in KADA 2009
Considering some of the problems being faced by participants at the on going 16th National Sports festival, some of the Directors of sports who are in Kaduna with their athletes and officials have commended organizers of the games for doing their best to stage a hitch free games but went ahead to pick holes in some aspects of the organization.
Speaking to The Abuja Inquirer, the Director of sports of Niger state, Mr. Baba Sheshi said that in as much as the state has done marvelously in terms of provision of facilities, the same can not be said of the organization but agreed that being a human affair he was not expecting hundred percent performance from the organizers.
He said that arrangements for transportation have not been the best as lack of enough buses to take officials and their athletes round the venues has been a major problem which should be addressed without further delay.
His words “In Games of this magnitude, it will be very difficult for you to say that you can not find one fault or two faults. Transportation has been a major impediment as most of us have found accommodation very far from venues for the different events. In this case, let me say that they have not really done well”.
He also said that considering the traffic congestion which he said has been caused by the influx of visitors, the organizers should have dedicated some routes for participants at the games so that they could be saved some of the hold ups.
The director also demanded for escorts which he said would to a reasonable extent reduce some of the inconveniences being faced by athletes and their officials.
He, however, expressed confidence that Niger state would explore some of its strong points which include Handball and squash to make appreciable impact at the Games.
Speaking in the same vein, Director of Sports for Bauchi State , Mr, Lawan Garba also commended the games organizers on the concentration of facilities at the Muritala Muhammed Square but noted that lopsided appointment of officiating officials which he said has elicited condemnation from participating states is a minus
Mr. Garba who said his target is to improve on the performance of his state at the last Gateway Games said that the 2006 national sports festival hosted by Ogun state has remained the best ever.
According to him, the organization of the 2006 national sports festival was near perfect just as he said the 2004 edition which FCT hosted lived up to expectations.
He also cited transportation and accreditation as some of the hitches which have undermined the efforts of the Games organizers.
The director of sports assured that his state would do very well in the sports festival because concerted efforts have been made to put the state athletes in shape for the games.
