Riot Approach to rescue operation is inimical to safety- Expert
The President General of Global Flight Safety, a non governmental organization, Engr. Joshua Amara, has identified riot approach to rescue operation as inimical to safety in Nigeria.
The President of the NGO stated this in Abuja while interacting with newsmen shortly after the opening section of a two days symposium on safety measures organized by Global Flight Safety.
Amara who reechoed that prevention is better than cure equally pointed out some of the lapses in disaster management and rescue operations in Nigeria to include among other thing.
Lackadaisical attitude of the safety worker, the uncoordinated nature of the organizations and government agencies charged with the responsibilities of preventing and rescuing victims such as National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps NSCDC.
For instance “if emergency response centre is established in all nook and cranny of the country, then the case of excessive lose of lives of victims of disasters and accident will be minimized”
He further noted that his organization is collaborating with some international safety organizations like Fly Safety Organization the highest safety group on earth and relevant government agencies to foster safety management in the country.
He equally promised to work closely with the government to establish a safety coordination centre where victims and Good Samaritan can easily contact in an emergency situation so as to respond which to accident victims.
He also condemned with strong terms a situation whereby residents and government will first of all called the attention of the media when there is a disaster situation such as collapse of building instead of calling on the safety workers to rescue the victims that may have been trapped by the collapse building.
Joshua further argued that such attitude to disaster management is barbaric and man inhumanity to man.
“Nigerians do not have respect for human persons and that is the more reason why a Nigerian will prefer to close his eyes when he sees a corps along the road instead of contacting or alerting the relevant government agencies responsible for evacuation”.
To this end he advised all Nigerians to contribute their services irrespective of their profession to foster safety in the country stressing that every citizen have a stake in area of safety.
He stated that his young organization is working round the clock to sensitize Nigerians on the need to mobilise the rescue agents first in any emergency situation in a bid to save lives before calling the attention of the pressmen who are also partners in fight.
Also a senior management staff of the group who preferred anonymity revealed to The Abuja Inquirer that the NGO’s major challenges is financial constrain which hamper in no small measure the activities of the organization.
He therefore called on philanthropist and good spirited Nigerians to support the activities of the group adding that the best gift to humanity is to save life.
He also give insight on how the organization came into being, “ the Global Flight Safety organization was established three years ago by some kind hearted professional in the aviation industry to promote safety in the industry.
